Picnic Pair
Those of you who know me know that I sculpt still points, those moments that reveal all that was
and all that will be in one present moment. For a long time I struggled with depicting romance. Classical sculptures inferred romance. The ever-popular cupid beguiled a boy or girl or both into some form of flowery bliss. Nice, but not what I had in mind. My breakthrough came looking at a stack of paperback romance novels in Barnes and Noble. There on each cover. some version of Fabio leans over a willing young lady. I never read a bodice- ripper. Maybe I should. But those covers were the perfect inspiration for Picnic. I had my stillpoint, the moment between hesitation and abandon, the moment between pursuit and capture. My first edition of picnic sold out of six editions, 65 pairs. As an experiment I created a Picnic in my white gesture-only style. Turns out thiswas just as popular. I feel a little out of my lane doing romance sculpture based on romance novels but doggone it, people seem to like it.
