I sculpted many dancers investing their all for all who watch, but I kept wanting to explore a moment before the performance, one of those quiet moments when you wonder, ‘Am I enough?’ I need to secure my costume, my makeup, my shoes, but none will make any real difference. I must be enough. All the energy flows from me alone. Can I do it?
I had sculpted the first second of the performances by Peggy Fleming, Merle Davis and Charlie White, but I wanted to explore the moment before that, that moment in a cluttered dressing room where you stand alone with your thoughts. For me, stockings brought out that moment. Not too much to them and plenty of time to think. Surveying the darkness before the stars come out.
